Décor & More Tour: Lyndhurst Families and Their Collections
Why is the mansion decorated the way it is? What is it about the art and furnishings in the mansion that makes this home so important? Join this tour to learn about what the Lyndhurst families collected, how and why they acquired art and decorated their home, and what they did to keep up with the taste of the times. While visiting the two main floors of the mansion you will hear the full history of the three families who called it home.
This 90-minute tour will discuss Lyndhurst’s important collection of paintings, sculptures, furniture, and decorative arts. We will see what wealthy Americans in the 19th and early 20th centuries were collecting and how and why that changed over time.
Highlights include paintings by Rembrandt Peale, William Adolphe Bouguereau, Jean Leon Gerome, Camille Corot, Theodore Rousseau, and Gustave Courbet; sculpture by Horatio Greenough, Erastus Dow Palmer, and John Rogers; windows and lamps by Louis Comfort Tiffany; and furniture by Alexander Jackson Davis, Alexander Roux, George Hunzinger, and the Herter Brothers.
