If HBO’s series The Gilded Age, in which Lyndhurst is prominently featured, has piqued your interest in this historic period, join us for the return of The Gilded Age Symposium. Speakers will include the production designer of the series as well as two other experts in the Gilded Age architecture of New York and Newport.
Bob Shaw is the Emmy Award-winning Production Designer of HBO’s The Gilded Age. He will be here at Lyndhurst, the location of the ‘Fane Household’ to discuss how he recreated the historical accuracy and opulence of the Gilded Age in actual historic houses. Mr. Shaw also won three Primetime Emmy Awards and was nominated for three more in the category Outstanding Art Direction for his work on the television programs The Sopranos, Mad Men, and Boardwalk Empire.
Award-winning architect Phillip James Dodd is recognized as an international authority on classical and traditional architecture. Mr. Dodd will discuss the five homes featured in his book–An American Renaissance: Beaux-Arts Architecture in New York City; of which Julian Fellowes, the creator of HBO`S The Gilded Age, wrote the foreword. As well as the patrons and architects that designed them, and their influences on the television adaptation of The Gilded Age.
Architect, Author, and Historian Gary Lawrance will speak on lost and forgotten Gilded Age mansions of Newport, RI. Mr. Lawrance has an extensive background in the history of Gilded Age architecture, landscapes, and society, and co-authored the bestselling book, Houses of the Hamptons 1880-1930 with Anne Surchin.

The Symposium will be located at the Welcome Center, the brick complex located just past the Lyndhurst mansion. Plan to arrive at the Welcome Center 15 minutes prior to the start time to check in and visit the Gift shop.
