Upper Landscape Tour  Lower Landscape Tour

Come join us for our two different landscape tours and learn about the history of the property and the families that called it home while our Mansion is closed to decorate for the Fall season! The Upper Landscape Tour and the Lower Landscape Tour are each an hour long walking tour that explore different areas of the property.

The Upper Landscape walking tour explores the area leading up to the mansion and examines the history of the park throughout the three families’ ownership. This tour will visit the beautiful Rose Garden which was planted in early 1911 by Helen Gould. Next door to the Rose Garden is the Greenhouse structure built by the renowned firm Lord & Burnham for Jay Gould, where you will learn about the construction of the building and the plants that were housed within it. Another stop on this tour is the Pool House built by Helen Gould. This tour will gain special access to the building, as it is not on display this year.

The Lower Landscape walking tour explores the area behind the mansion down toward the Hudson River.  Visitors are led down from the marble garden furniture and fountains, into the early 20th century Laundry Building, then up to the Lyndhurst Veranda and then down through a series of garden sitting areas and rock outcroppings known as “rockeries” offering sweeping views of the Hudson River.   Trees, plantings, and various outbuildings are discussed in passing.  The tour concludes inside the restored 19th-century bowling alley with an exhibit on Lyndhurst’s fourth owner, Helen Gould, and Lyndhurst neighbor Madam C. J. Walker. Come enjoy the fresh air and get some exercise while you learn about the history of the sweeping landscape around Lyndhurst Mansion!

Both tours depart from the Welcome Center and requires the ability to walk over the uneven hilly ground for sixty minutes. While much of the lower landscape tour goes downhill on cement pathways, it requires an extensive and steep uphill walk to return to the parking lot. It is not recommended for those with mobility issues or children under 6 years of age.

This tour does not include access to the mansion. The mansion is CLOSED during the days these landscape tours are running for Fall decorating.

You do NOT need to purchase a separate Grounds Pass with this ticket.

Tickets are non-refundable.  Tour is rain or shine, so come prepared!
