Inside/Outside: From Mansion to Bowling Alley
Want to see Lyndhurst inside and out? Then this tour is for you! You will see the mansion’s two main floors filled with decorative pieces, art, and furniture left by the three owners, including works by Tiffany, Alexander Jackson Davis, and other notable artists. You will learn about the Gould family’s lavish lifestyles at the height of the Gilded Age, the estate’s 180-year history, and the exciting things that take place at Lyndhurst today. Then you will take a leisurely stroll down to the Hudson River, wending your way past restored “outdoor rooms” in our rockeries, the site of an elaborate treehouse, and rare trees and gardens. While you take in the best river views, you’ll hear about several outbuildings and the estate’s “recreation center” which is our Bowling Alley Recreation Pavilion.
The 90-minute tour ends with a visit to the restored 19th-century bowling alley with an exhibit on Lyndhurst owner Helen Gould and neighbor Madam C. J. Walker.
The tour includes a trip up one staircase and the landscape walk, so please wear walking shoes and bring water. The tour departs from the Welcome Center and requires an uphill walk when finished. It is not recommended for those with mobility issues or children under 6 years old.
Please present printed tour tickets or have them available on your smartphone to show to Welcome Center staff when checking in for your tour.
All visitors must have a pre-purchased ticket to enter the Mansion. A limited number of tickets are available for each tour and tickets do sell out. If you are taking a tour, you do NOT need to purchase a Daily Grounds Pass. All ticket purchases are non-refundable.
