Inside/Outside: From Mansion to Bowling Alley

Do you want to see Lyndhurst from the inside and out? Then this tour is for you! You will see the mansion’s two main floors filled with original decorative art and furniture from the three owners, and also pass through the basement-level kitchens. You will learn about the estate’s 180-year history as well as the families’ lavish lifestyles at the height of the Gilded Age. After visiting the Mansion, you will take a leisurely stroll towards the Hudson River, wending your way past restored “outdoor rooms,” the site of an elaborate treehouse and rare trees and gardens. While you take in the best views of the river, you’ll hear about several outbuildings and the estate’s “recreation center.” The 90-minute tour ends with a visit to the restored 19th-century bowling alley with an exhibit on Lyndhurst owner Helen Gould and neighbor Madam C. J. Walker in the North Parlor as well as entering the South Parlor which features decorative arts and 1895 wicker furniture and of course the 1894 bowling lanes!

Lyndhurst welcomes all visitors, but please note that this tour requires a trip up one staircase, down staircases, and extensive walking on uneven terrain, so please bring water and wear comfortable walking shoes. It is not recommended for those with mobility issues or children under 6 years of age.

No large bags, backpacks or strollers allowed in the mansion.

Please present printed tour tickets or have them available on your smartphone to show to Welcome Center staff when checking in for your tour.

All visitors must have a pre-purchased ticket to enter the Mansion. A limited number of tickets are available for each tour and tickets do sell out. If you are taking a tour, you do NOT need to purchase a Daily Grounds Pass. All ticket purchases are non-refundable.
