Path Through History at Lyndhurst
Various Dates, June & October, 2026
$35-$42 + service fees
Come join us on this special “I Love New York” Path Through History Tour! This rarely-offered specialized tour will lead you through a 2-hour visit of our historic estate; indoors and out, and upstairs and down.
You will begin by exploring the first through fifth floors of the mansion, providing visitors with the history of our 19th-century decorative arts and furniture from the previous owners of Lyndhurst. You will visit rooms such as the Parlor, filled with furniture designed by architect A.J. Davis, the opulent Grand Picture Gallery with an original collection of the Gould’s Gilded Age paintings, and views of impressive Tiffany stained glass windows installed throughout the mansion.
Visitors then climb to the observation tower with panoramic views of the Hudson River and Manhattan. You will then descend the backstairs to view the Butler’s Suite which connects to the kitchens, before exiting through the servants’ dining room to visit the 1911 Laundry Building, complete with original fixtures.
After visiting the Mansion, you will take a leisurely stroll towards the Hudson River, winding your way past restored “outdoor rooms,” the site of an elaborate treehouse and rare trees and gardens. While you take in the best views of the river, you’ll hear about several outbuildings and the estate’s “recreation center.” This two-hour tour ends with a visit to the restored 19th-century bowling alley with an exhibit on Lyndhurst owner Helen Gould and neighbor Madam C. J. Walker. Our bowling alley is furnished with Arts & Crafts period decorative arts and 1895 wicker furniture in addition to the 1894 bowling lanes.
